DSDN 171 – Design + Context - Introduction


Some General Themes:

·      Cultural context of Design.
·      Inter connectivity of the arts.
·      Technology as Design catalyst.
·      History as artistic inspiration.
·      Timelessness issues in design.

Expect to see lots of:

·      Graphics design and typography.
·      Furniture and product design.
·      Ceramics, wood, stone, glass, metalwork.
·      Architecture, interiors and spatial design.
·      Spectacle, cinema and interface.
·      Fine arts, painting,, sculpture and music.
·      New Zealand design and non-western design.

Readings:

·      Variety of sources: primary and secondary.
·      To be done prior to tutorials.
·      General ideas will be examinable.
·      Have questions prepared for tutorials.
·      Will be posted on the website

Rules:

·      Readings to be done in advance of tutorials.
·      Lecture and tutorial attendance mandatory.
·      Mobile technology off.
·      Proofread blogs before submission.
·      One A4 sheet of notes (both sides) for tests.
·      Make an effort to talk in tutorials.

Tests:

·      Two tests to be held in lecture.
·      Worth 20% of final grade each.
·      Test 1: Wednesday, April 5th (12:00).
·      Test 2: Wednesday, June 6th (12:00).
·      Testing for broad strokes, not details.
·      One A4 sheet of notes allowed.
·      Multiple choice, short answer and essay responses.
·      Examinable images will be highlighted in red.

·      Five blogs spaced roughly two weeks apart.
·      Worth 10% of final grade.
·      Blog 1: design personae.
·      Blog 2: Research statement and bibliography.
·      Blog 3: antiques hunter.
·      Blog 4: Curatorial.

·      Proofread your work!
